circa 1863, with blued octagonal 24in. barrel, dove-tailed blade fore-sight, twin-notch folding rear-sight, the breech-end of barrel marked 'No44' along with the serial number, rounded dropping block central hammer receiver marked 'BALLARD'S PATENT NOV 5 1861' on the right hand side and 'MERWIN & BRAY, AGT'S, NEW YORK' on the left, walnut straight hand butt-stock with iron crescent heel-plate, walnut splinter fore-end with manually operated sliding ejector near breech and iron nose-cap, under-lever forming the trigger-guard.
